Fail Forward: the Investment Ready Edition

February 17th 2017 | 20:00-22:00

Every entrepreneur runs into challenges. They’re just not always comfortable talking about it. But at Impact Hub Amsterdam we believe that experimentation is essential for innovation. As part of the 2017 edition of the Investment Ready NL Program, in which 11 circular enterprises embarked on a peer-to-peer learning journey, we invited three seasoned entrepreneurs to share their experiences with failure and difficult moments. And there will be plenty of time for Q&A!

Keynote – “How to start a social enterprise in a failing society”, Claudia Valladares, co-Founder and director of Impact Hub Caracas, Venezuela. Claudia Valladares is a social entrepreneur from the Schwab Foundation of the World Economic Forum, passionate to make a better world. She is the co-founder and director of Impact Hub Caracas. She was also the founder of the microfinance initiative Banca Comunitaria Banesco and the Ecosistema Nacional de Emprendimiento Venezuela.

“Lessons from a circular enterprise”, Bert van Son, Chief Executive Officer of MUD Jeans. Bert is a sustainability driven entrepreneur focused on advancing the circular economy. His company, MUD Jeans, introduced the concept of ‘Lease a Jeans’ in 2013, turning jeans into a service rather than products owned by the consumer, who can instead lease his favourite pair. This way, the fashion label retains ownership of the jeans and, most importantly, the materials they’re made of. And this gives MUD Jeans the chance to focus on designing sustainable organic cotton jeans that are easy to disassemble and recycle.

“The challenges of starting a business with friends and building a team”, Mark Kulsdom, Founder of Dutch Weed Burger. Mark is an ecopreneur and the self-styled ‘Chef everything’ of the the Dutch Weed Burger, a social enterprise that makes one of the healthiest kinds of burgers on the planet, chockfull of protein rich and flavoursome seaweed. Mark came up with the idea of a vegan burger while making his documentary, The Future Of Food (2013). Nowadays, his company is a well-known brand, with its burgers available all over the Netherlands.
