Whether you seek new customers in the Netherlands or abroad, a little help never hurts. There are several interesting initiatives and programs that can support you during your quest to expand!
Cooperation between startups and corporates is important because the two reinforce each other’s strengths and potential. Corporates have access to an international network, of which a startup could benefit to speed up their process of growth and innovation. Collaborating with an innovative startup on the brink of regeneration will make corporates more competitive in a market that is evolving at a fast rate. For startups having a corporate as launching customer will make growth possible and tap into a global network that can help them grow and expand.
Among the initiatives, there is COSTA, where the top of the Dutch corporates joined forces by sharing knowledge and their best and worst practices. Among this group of corporate frontrunners are KPN, Shell, Philips, AkzoNobel, Port of Rotterdam, Eneco, ING, KLM, DSM, Thales Nederland, NS, Rabobank, and Unilever.
Other initiatives are Techilicious, a concept where tech startups and corporates meet and dine together to make deals. TekDelta, a joint initiative of Dutch corporates, knowledge institutes and the startup community. TekDelta connects tech startups to corporate experts and networks, in a fast, free and startup-friendly way. And AddVentured, an innovation program of the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce. AddVentured helps SMEs, startups and corporates to find each other and get in contact. Together they take up challenges in a joint effort, leading to innovation and new business.
Contracting with governments can be very attractive. Do you have a product or service that ‘needs’ an introduction to the Dutch government? Do you have a perfect solution or would you like to test your prototype in a public area?
More and more governments in the Netherlands look beyond their traditional suppliers and engage with startups. Municipalities, Provinces and Ministries have introduced programs for startups. Startups have new ideas and are often faster, more flexible and more cost-effective than large suppliers. (Pre-commercial) innovative procurement is interesting to provide solutions to the government.
The Startup in Residence Programs started in Amsterdam and now active in other cities, provinces and Ministries, matches startups solutions with governmental needs. During the program, startups witness firsthand challenges faced by governments.
The Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR) has been set up as a competition. With the program, governments make a budget available to solve specific societal the problem or accelerate the desired transition.
Because SBIR involves contracts, it is very attractive to early-stage companies to apply. Business with the best offers will be awarded a feasibility study. Companies with the most promising studies will be asked to further develop their products within governments.
The Mobility Lab program eases roadblocks for startups by testing. With personal connections and a prototype based on real user needs, startups have a head start for entering contract agreements with government customers.
