The universities in the Netherlands have nominated 27 startups for the Academic Startup Competition 2019. These startups participate in the title competition for the most groundbreaking innovations in science in the Netherlands.
The Academic Startup Competition is an initiative of the Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU), the Netherlands Academy of Technology and Innovation (AcTI) and StartupDelta. The election consists of this selection round by the universities and a final on the 14th of May in which a jury chooses ten winners. They will be part of the top10-list of most groundbreaking innovations in science in the Netherlands. During the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) on the 4th and 5th of June in The Hague, these startups will also be given the opportunity to present their startup to a global audience.
With the election, the organizers put valorization and academic spin-offs internationally in the spotlight. Jorrit Kuipers, board member of AcTI: “Academic startups are extremely important for the Netherlands because of their often innovative breakthroughs that have an impact on society worldwide in many ways. But knowledge alone is not enough; you also need entrepreneurship and the drive to market this knowledge. The selected startups are all great examples of how science and entrepreneurship can reinforce each other and prove that Dutch universities produce beautiful (deep) technology companies.”
